Miranda MacGillivray
Currently a Master’s student studying the importance of sediment microbes for eelgrass restoration. Miranda grew up on the waters and mountains around Vancouver and through her whole life has been fascinated with intertidal and marine ecology, exploring tidepools, swimming with seals and paddling with whales. It is this curiosity in ecology that led her to complete a biology degree and continue into research at the University of British Columbia. She has spent several years as an outdoor educator and kayak guide in British Columbia and New Zealand. She is a passionate scuba diver, skier, baker, and doer of crafty things.
Spencer Shields
Currently a Master’s student studying remote sensing at the University of British Columbia, Spencer’s research focuses on how to use cutting-edge, high-resolution satellites for environmental monitoring. Previously, Spencer worked as a kayak guide and outdoor educator, during which time he led trips in New Zealand, Belize, Panama, and numerous locations around Vancouver Island (how convenient!). In addition to science and adventuring, Spencer enjoys hanging out in used bookstores and slightly divey pubs, and is an admirer of small fluffy dogs.
